Quartz can grow in different shapes, depending on the environmental condition under which they are crystalizing. Faden Quartz, for instance, crystallized between two walls of a cavity that is slowly moving apart. This expansion causes the crystal to fracture and repair itself repetitively, making a distinctive, opaque fracture line in the direction of the wall separation axis while the crystal grows normally on the other two axes.
